Traditionally, when filing a European Union design application, up to seven static views were submitted to define the scope of protection sought for the design, such as top view, bottom view, left view, right view, front view, rear view and perspective view.
This has changed on 1st July 2026. EUIPO allows now up to 10 views. Furthermore, new types of representations can be filed when applying for a European Union design : dynamic and animated representations.
A dynamic representation, such as an animated 3D view, allows the object to be viewed from different angles, at the choice of the viewer, allowing to view the product under every angles. The accepted file formats are .obj and .stl.
An animated representation can show the movement, transition or any other sort of animation of design features, typically by means of a MP4 video, in a continuous visual representation.
It is not possible to combine the different types of representation.
